South Island councillors show that Māori representation matters

Pacific Mornings' host William Terite highlights that councils around the country are showing the value of having Māori voices around the decision-making table.

This is a transcript of Will's Word on Wednesday, 4 September:

Marlborough’s decision to keep its Māori ward is a significant win for locals

On Tuesday, the Marlborough District Council voted unanimously to retain this seat, which will now go to a binding public referendum in 2025.

This means Māori voices will continue to have a dedicated seat at the council table, reflecting the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi

This decision comes as the government proposes changes to the Electoral Act, which could force councils to hold referendums on Māori wards or abolish them altogether.

Despite these uncertainties, Marlborough’s choice shows a strong commitment to inclusive governance and recognising Māori perspectives.

Local iwi and community members have welcomed the move, seeing it as a crucial step in ensuring their voices are heard.

Marlborough’s vote is a clear message that Māori representation matters and sets a positive example for other councils facing similar decisions.

Marlborough is one of three councils at the top of the South Island deciding on the future of their Māori wards this week.
