This is a transcript of Will's Word on 22 October, 2024:

It's encouraging to finally see progress on the New Caledonia issue, with President Louis Mapou confirming that a Pacific Islands Forum fact-finding mission will take place from October 27 to 29.

It comes after a prolonged period of unrest and tension, which has deeply affected the local population and economy.

The mission's purpose is clear: to assess the ongoing turmoil and its devastating impact, including the loss of lives and significant economic damage.

The fact that it’s happening at all signifies a crucial step towards addressing pressing concerns and finding a pathway forward.

The initial delays, stemming from disagreements between France and New Caledonia’s local government, highlighted the complexity of the situation.

However, the new agreement reflects a willingness to engage in dialogue and support, especially from the PIF member states.

This collaborative approach is essential for fostering stability in the region.

As the mission approaches, there is hope that it will provide the necessary insights and facilitate meaningful discussions that could lead to a more peaceful and prosperous future for New Caledonia.

It’s high time we move forward, and this mission could be the catalyst for change.
