Ni-Vanuatu singer to release new EP album and gift proceeds to local hospital.
It’s been three years since Vanessa Quai graced the stage but all that’s about to change with the release of her new EP album in Port Vila next month.
Described by The Guardian as one of Vanuatu’s "living cultural icons" she’s been on hiatus raising baby daughter Vianna. Taking inspiration from Queen Bey, Quai muses: “Like Beyonce says - we are strong enough to bear children then get back to business!”
Quai burst onto the scene when she released her first studio album To Aitape With Love at 9-years-old before placing third the following year in Gold Coast’s South Pacific International Song contest. While other children were focused on school, Quai was becoming a household name.
Fast forward and the singer, who has embodied the musical dreams of the South Pacific for decades, is living a dream all of her own: motherhood and the opportunity to share her gifts to help those in need.
Beyond the promise of a spectacular performance, Quai will be donating a portion of ticket sales from her concert to the local children’s ward.
“It's been in my heart for quite some time to just help donate back to our children back here,” says Quai.
“I've been informed by our children's Doctor here Dr Annett Garae that they are wanting to buy a new echocardiography machine for the children. My grandparents were doctors - my parents raised us to have this vision to help others.”
Her latest EP is different to past offerings, there’s the gospel foundations in the final track but the first five songs arise from a rare wisdom wrought over decades, channeling connection and island life. Daughter Vianna features in Precious with Desiz, DJ Albert, Tujah, Blanco and Positive featuring across other tracks.
“There is one special song I wrote for my daughter it's called Precious,” says Quai.
"I'm excited to share my music again - and feature my daughter in one song at the concert, just her singing a few lines - [and] I hope she can do it without freezing up on stage," she chuckles.
"One track I wrote about how grateful I am to be living in the islands - love the simplicity. I wrote about how I came to overcome difficulties, challenges and hard times in my life, the last track I wrote about how God has been with me throughout my journey and it's an encouraging song.”
